Education in Odisha

Education is the principal instrument of developing human capabilities. It is the main part of the government to provide education to its citizens. By which it will help to shape the destiny of the nation. The state of Odisha has become a centre of learning in the eastern India after it became a separate state on 1st April 1936. After Independence a lot of reforms have been made in the education system of Odisha to make it appreciated. Because of the reforms the standard of education in Odisha is qualitative. Subsequent Governments have taken a lot of initiatives to make the standard of education more attractive. Odisha has fared reasonably well in terms of literacy rates. The overall literacy rate according to Census 2011 is 73.5%, which is marginally behind of the national average of 74.04%.

Odisha has been a seat of education from primary to the highest level since the ancient times. Historically, Odisha has been at the forefront of education and research. The ruins of a major ancient university and center of Buddhist learning (Ratnagiri), were discovered in the Jajpur district of Odisha. The state was famous as an education hub in ancient days.

The education system of Odisha has given base to a lot of Engineering and professional institutes. In recent years students from different part of India are coming to Odisha for higher education. It can be said that a revolution in the sphere of education has been started in Odisha after 90s. Odisha now a day is providing best infrastructure for general education, technical education, professional education and vocational education. Today the state has some of the renowned universities in the country. Its capital city, Bhubaneswar, is emerging as a knowledge hub in India with several new public and private universities, including the establishment of an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), are India's new National Universities by the government, as well as Vedanta University, one of the world's largest private university. So many institutes of national and international reputation are eagerly choosing Odisha as their destinations because education in this soil has a bright and prosperous future.

Today the state has some of the renowned universities in the country. Some of the major universities are the Biju Patnaik University of Technology, Utakal University, Sambalpur  University,  Kalinga institute of Industrial Technology, Shir Jagannath Sanskrit Vishvavidyalaya, Fakir Mohan University, National Institute of Technology, Odisha University of Agriculture and many more. There used to be students from far away countries like Persia, Greece and China to study mathematics, philosophy and astronomy. The prestigious NIT Rourkela is an institute of national importance. There are plenty of engineering colleges, science colleges, technology, higher studies and many more.
